A lush, well maintained lawn is a highly attractive feature but lawns require some care and attention to keep them looking their best. Your lawn might be subject to a lot of wear and tear (especially if you have children or pets) but there’s plenty you can do to keep it well maintained all year round.
If your lawn has been looking a little worse for wear recently or if you want to keep it vibrant and healthy, see below for our top tips to maintain your lawn.
Regular mowing
Regular mowing encourages roots to spread, which helps to fill in gaps and reduce weeds. Lawns should be cut once a week in summer and once every two weeks during spring, autumn and winter (if the weather is mild). Raise the height of your mower to leave lawns longer in summer (around five to 10cm) to prevent the grass from going brown.
Drainage
Lawns need good drainage to stay healthy but they can become compacted with a lot of regular use. Improve drainage by aerating your lawn with a garden fork; this also allows roots to breathe and encourages grass to regrow. Fill in any holes with sand to discourage weeds and improve drainage further.
Remove weeds
Weeds can quickly smother your lawn and inhibit growth of healthy grass, but regular mowing will help to keep weeds at bay. You may need to remove some larger weeds by hand using a hand trowel, but you should avoid using chemical weed killers if you can help it. These products are often too harsh for your grass, so try a natural herbicide instead.
Watering
Lawns need water during dry weather to prevent the grass from dying, but don’t over water as this can cause them to root poorly. The amount of watering you do will depend on rainfall but lawns need an average of an inch to an inch and a half of water a week. Use rainwater from a butt if possible to save mains water and keep lawns healthy if there’s a hosepipe ban.
